James Wise was born November 17, 1827 in Bradley County, Tennessee to Henry Wise and Margaret Wise. (Margaret was born in Bedford County, Tennessee) (unknown where Henry was born) James had a sister Syntha Wise who Joseph Mack Williams. Unknown if there were any other siblings.
James married Elizabeth Farley (no known information on her). She died in 1883 Christian County, Missouri. James and Elizabeth had the following children;
Elizabeth Farley Wise passed away in 1883 and is buried in Wise Hill Cemetery. James then married a widow with one son, Mary Tiney Wilhite Smith in 1886 in Ozark, Missour. (She was the widow of William Smith and her son was Thomas Andrew Smith born December 13, 1883 in Stone County, Missouri.) Mary was born August 9, 1855 in Searcy County, Arkansas to William Wilhite (Wilhoit) and Elizabeth Rose.
James and Mary had 3 children.
NOTE: from Civil War Military Records James was 5 ½ feet tall, light complexion, blue eyes and black hair. He served as a private in Company M. Phelps Regiment Greene Co. Missouri Home Guard.
NOTE: story told by his grandson, Neil Wise A story about James being wounded, not in battle, but while on leave. Several individuals shot him and when the town's people found out hunted the men down and killed them. He walked with a limp as a result of the wound.
